Since Kaisen Donburi or Seafood Rice Bowl is a famous dish in Sapporo, we made sure to include it in our Sapporo experience. For our 2nd day, we woke up early and walked to Nijo Fish Market, a famous place for fresh seafood more specifically, Kaisen Donburi. While there are many dining options in Nijo Fish Market, only a few serves Kaisen Donburi.
We picked Ohiso since it is the most popular restaurant in the area. As early as 7AM, there’s already a queue at Ohiso.
Inside, the dining area is divided in multiple sections with different seating options. Similar to most establishments in Japan, the place was a bit cramped.
While the restaurant looked old-fashioned, ordering is via tablet. Ohiso offers around 30 kinds of Kaisen Donburi. The most famous one is the sanshoku-don or 3-colored bowl, with the combination of crab meat, uni or sea urchin and salmon roe. Unfortunately, during our visit, uni is not available. So we replaced it salmon.
We also sampled a 2-colored bowl with the combination of crab meat and salmon roe.
Since we are not used to eating raw in the morning, we ordered a grilled cod for sharing.
Eventhough uni was not available during our visit, I still enjoyed the Kaisen Donburi experience at Ohiso. Apart from the fresh taste of the seafood, I was really impressed by the presentation and combination of colors.
Recommendation: sanshoku-don or 3-colored bowl with crab, uni and salmon roe.
Tips: Since Ohiso is a popular restaurant in Nijo Fish Market, expect a queue as early as 7AM and during peak hours.
