Tonkyu or Tonkiyuu, a small Japanese restaurant specializing in Tonkatsu in Asakusa. Tonkyu is situated near Kaminarimon, on the right side of Nakamise Street.
Inside, Tonkyu maintains a homey atmosphere with a small dining area divided into 3 sections: a regular table seating, the traditional Japanese table with tatami seats and bar counter facing the open kitchen.
Tonkyu offers a variety of options including western cuisine, curry and various katsu meal sets. A typical Japanese meal set includes rice, cabbage salad, pickles and miso soup.
During our visit, I wanted to try their curry but it was sold-out already. Instead, I sampled their specialty, the Rosu Katsu Set which is a Tonkatsu or the pork loin cutlet.
Then, we also tried the Salmon Fry Set,
and the Ebi Fry Set. This meal comes with 2 big shrimps.
To complete our Tonkyu experience, we also ordered a bottle of cold sake.
Since this was a random picked Tonkyu, which appeared modest from the outside, we had little expectations. However, we were surprised by the delicious dishes we tried. Our orders has generous portions and were reasonably priced. Also, the laid back ambiance added to the whole experience. If you are craving for Tonkatsu around Asakusa, I would recommend Tonkyu.
After lunch at Tonkyu, we continued our DIY tour of Tokyo.
Recommendation: I haven’t tried it but the Hamburger Steak Set looks delicious.
Tip: Tonkyu also offers a seasonal dish, the Kaki Fry Set which is deep-fried oysters.
